Home improvement project #17- Finished!

. Posted by HelloThe toilet is no longer homeless. At last the wallpaper is down from the half bath, and now it's a nice shade of cappucino.

The only thing left now is the baseboards, and project #16 will be done!

Home improvement #18 Posted by Hello

Jon and I installed these three recessed lights last weekend. Pretty easy overall. Notice the toilet in the hall. Guess I'd better finish project #17 next....

The crowd for my talk at the Los Angeles chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association. My talk on "Sygate's Network Admission Control Technology" was surprisingly well recieved.

U2 Live in SJ

Sigh-- what can I say? I love them!I've seen many live shows, and U2 tops my list (sorry, it's true). Maybe it's because I grew up the past 20 years revelling in every note. Maybe it's because Bono oozes charisma. Maybe it's the shivers that travel up me for the first 15 minutes of each concert. And there's a cool light show too.

I can't talk about Bono without gushing, so in short, I'll say that I really respect and admire him. He uses his celebrity to raise awareness about issues that need to be dealt with: equal rights, poverty, war and peace, social injustices, and the like. Good for him!

The concert was not the best, but it was great, as usual.

We saw U2 last night. We both agree that it wasn't quite as good as the Elevation tour, but nonetheless it totally rocked. I noticed that they changed the arrangements of quite a few songs, and Bono was on a kick where he incorporated the words from other songs into the instrumental parts. He worked in "Send in the clowns", "Blackbird", and a few others we can't remember right now.

He also told a story about the pope- how he met the pope and gave the pope his sunglasses. Then Bono reached into his pocket and said "then he gave me this" and pulled out some Rosary Beads and put them on the mike stand. Then he pontificated about the pope for a while.

They have become the masters of crowd involvement. For instance, they used a quiet, slow, sparse arrangement of Elevation to draw the crowd into singing along. Once they had everyone going, the whole crowd- every fucking person- screamed out "ELEVATION" and the band exploded into the song. They ended with "40" with a chorus of "How long will I sing this song" and the entire arena sang the chorus over and over as they shone a spotlight on the crowd and then left stage one by one.

They have a new stage- with the huge black and white screens from the previous tour on the very top, up high, and this new curtain of lights that surrounds the stage. It's amazing- showing light shows and videos on a screen that's made of strings of large lights 40 feet hight.

Kings of Leon is a loud, fast band that basically suck.

My dive partner in New Zealand, Chris, had a digital camera with him and took this photo of me.

If you'd like to see what it was like underwater, he's got lots of photos on his website. He's even got the shots of the huge manta ray. Go to www.deadGander.com, click on photos, new zeland, and then diving.
